I was looking into Bear Grylls’ training recently, and honestly, I like the way he approaches fitness. It’s not just about lifting heavy and looking good in a mirror. There’s a lot of strength, endurance, climbing, running, carrying, and overall conditioning involved.

That kind of training makes sense to me. You want your body to actually be useful when you need it, not just look like it knows what a dumbbell is.

It got me thinking, though. If you had to train like Bear Grylls for a month, what do you think would give you the most trouble?

I’d probably be fine with the workouts. It’s the part where he decides breakfast should be something he found under a rock that I'd have a problem with.

You're not a real man if you don't like to eat what you find under rocks.

I am not sure what he does exactly but if there was any sort of climbing involved up rockwalls or mountains, etc that would probably give me the most trouble.

I have built a very high capacity for functional training, cardio and heavy weights over a long period of developing those systems together including weighted vest hill sprints with a 60lb vest/40lb resistance band pants, weighted vest/weighted sled pulls, HIIT training with the vest and pants, heavy lifting and lots of daily steps(18K+ average over 2+ years)

So there would probably be some other things that are specific movements I might struggle with for a time, but that's normal, because unless you do the exact exercises you are always going to struggle because other muscles and systems get recruited in ways that they are not used to.

But overall, my capacity for work is extraordinaroly high compared to most people and that's through a sustained protocol of my training over many years.

Yeah, that makes sense. With that kind of training background, you’d probably handle most of the physical demands pretty well. And I agree, there’s always going to be a learning curve with movements you haven’t trained before, no matter how good your overall conditioning is.

It sounds like you’ve put a lot of work into making training a long-term habit. Do you still have days when consistency is a struggle, or has training pretty much become part of your normal routine?
