I would just get a power rack (with a pull up bar), an adjustable bench, a barbell and 200-350lbs in plates

It'll work out at at least double the cost. That weight set and bench is looking at the maximum budget I'll be able to go to for the forseeable future.

In the long run, better to save for a few months and afford the better stuff.

Can you make it to the gym once a week? You can still maintain/get stronger while you save up.

You could of course buy that and save for the power rack seperately.

Your call.

Cheaper? The power racks are about the same as that bench and weight set.

Of course, it's also a space thing. I only have my bedroom space to put it in. I can't make it to the gym once a week after the middle of June, which is why I need a weight set. The other problem is that I'm awaiting authorisation from a Naval surgeon to proceed with my selection-it's not serious, I'll pass. Procedure is an arse- so once I'm in 90% of my stuff is going into storage or onto eBay.

I basically want to maintain the muscle I have, and add some more if I can do it without hindering my running skills.

a power rack and bench don't take up any more space than the monstrosity you linked to, with its useless preacher's curl and nearly useless leg extension device.

the power rack w/ pull up bar becomes the immobile piece, while a light adjustable bench can be put exactly where you need it--and if you're short on space, you can turn it sideways in the rack when not in use, thus actually taking up less space.

your space objection is only remotely valid if you have a short ceiling.

so let's put this out in the open. you're perfectly willing to spend $400 for something that WON'T do the job, but unwilling to save up a bit to spend $600-700 on doing it right?

http://www.muscletalk.co.uk/article-home-gym.aspx

and these estimates don't include finding one or more pieces used through classifieds, etc.

Two minutes of searching craiglist and I found someone selling everything listed in the link above (including dip attachment) for $250, 15 minutes away from where I live. too bad my landlord wouldn't appreciate a power rack on the parquet floors.....

Yeah, ditch the all-in-one and get a power rack.

Also, look at ebay. People are always getting rid of benches and weights on there.

So the bench is sh!t, that's all I was looking for

On the side of a low ceiling, I have a sloping ceiling. In the area that the power rack would have to go, I can't get a wardrobe at 6' to sit flush against the wall.

I'll search around a bit more.

From the article:

A 7x10 foot space would be ideal.
I have about a 6x5 to store things in, and then when i want to use it, my bedroom will be filled right out with it.

I think I may start a homegym in my garage after looking at that article. I constantly find myself skipping workouts due to traveling to the gym, etc. The gym in my hometown isn't open past 8pm either so this would be great if I come back from a trip at 10PM and would like to get a workout in.

Good times. My new boss said I can choose most of my hours to accommodate my training. I have longer to save for training gear.

wheres the barbell?

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.
