Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.

Actually it's more like some affirmations are and some aren't. Affirmations have a lot of people confused because it can be applied so widely, however this isn't a case of "it always works" or "it never works" like many people would view it. I'd say the people saying it works and those saying it doesn't are both correct, but both sides only see the cases that does or doesn't work respectively.
To illustrate my point. If you tell yourself you'll win the lottery over and over again it does not increase your chances, it won't work. If you tell yourself you have confidence and will attract women it will probably affect your mind, meaning it has a good chance of working.
Affirmations isn't some supernatural new age sh!t, that's why it won't work for anything that's determined by pure chance like lotteries. It will however work for anything where your own behavior is a significant factor to accomplishing whatever the affirmation is about. This is because the mind is the control center of you, affirmations are basically just to convince yourself that you can do it. It's confidence and it is the confidence that leads you to take actions towards getting what you want.
Affirmations significantly helps with overcoming the first obstacle, not giving up before trying, most people with lacking confidence fail before even trying. Then it fuels motivation so you don't give up because of impatience, it keeps your attitude optimistic, most people with low confidence also have a tendency to be pessimistic, impatient and give because of that.
Affirmations really aren't any fancier than taking focus away from pessimistic thoughts. The better you are at keeping your focus on the positive affirmations, the more effective they are. So couple it with some meditative practices and you've got a powerful tool to achieve your goals.
On some occasions my focus was so sharp I still struggle to believe how well it worked.
