Hinge is popular in the UK, my friend was using it in 2017 and getting dates (I wasn’t using OLD at the time). I have never used it myself.
The online dating websites in the early 2000s were likely better than the swipe apps today but still not great. I'm sure there are plenty of stories similar to the story of @I_have_BDE 's brother from that era. If that guy had a lot of "one date, no sex, no second date" type interactions dating websites at that time, then a lot more men were having that same issue.
You can skip the expensive cars, the fancy clothes, and the endless gym selfies. Completely unnecessary.

FAR more sloppy women than men though. I'm not saying all men skinny but less men seem obese or maybe they're just a tad husky unlike the women seem to outnumber men when it comes to being fat.
Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.
