open a car wash or finish my computer degree?

Hi guys,

Im 40 years old and im about 6 months away from finishing an associates degree in computer science degree. Even though I am getting good grades, I went into the computer field just for the money and I dont have a passion for computers. I went back to college because I was fed up with my current career which is working for a water department. Im too old to be digging ditches now. Now im debating on whether to quit the college and just to buy a car wash. Any suggestions on what I should do?

You will get crushed by people like me who are obsessed with programming so the car wash would probably be a better idea.

If you don‘t have drive in IT you will have a hard time staying up to date. If you‘re ok with stagnation an inhouse admin job i.e. would be ok, but not consulting and services.

There are interesting fields like forensics, but ask yourself if you could be happy longterm, when you only stay for some cash.

But you‘re done in half a year. I don‘t know what an associates degree is but I imagine you were working on it some time. Why not finishing it and think about your option with the car wash? Can you start your car wash besides working on finishing your degree?

I would say that computer science, wanting or not, has way more demand that car washing. Even if it's not really what you want, it may be the safest choice that will guarantee a good income. Maybe in the future, when you saved a good money, you can open your own Car Wash and leave the computer science jobs?

OP, it is a world stage now and competition is fierce. at the same time demand is high. if you don't like doing it, not a nice way to spend so much of your time. As Game78 tells, there are a lot of rock stars already. It can still be done, but need to have interest and motivation.

a car wash business can make money. lots of ways to sell extra products and services around that and even add more locations to the business. with motivation can get wealthy from doing that. more money than writing code for someone else.
