I'm planning on going to Spain to teach English for a couple months. Is anyone familiar with this country? Any recommendations on what part of the country I should live? I'm not looking for the best city to DJ chicks, just where I can get the greatest experience.

Many foreigners prefer the South, although the northern parts are what I lovemost.
However, it depends on what you want and what you're bringing with you. If you already know Spanish and want to improve your skills there, I'd not go to Barcelona or Madrid, these cities are full of foreigners, you'd have trouble meeting a Spaniard.
Do you know how to find jobs there, do you have numbers etc? If I were you, and it's about the experience, I'd travel a lot.
Nice cities to see: Barcelona, Salamanca, Santiago de Compostela, Granada and San Sebastian (Donostia in Basque). If you're going to Santiago, you could also head down south to Portugal. Porto and Lisbon are well worth a visit. And the beaches of the Algarve are the best.

I can vouch for Donostia. Bilbao is where I live, it's not too exciting but the people are friendly. It's quite diverse, but not a lot of people speak any sort of decent english. You'll meet a lot of latin americans.

I'd like to go somewhere English isn't widely spoken so I'd be forced to speak Spanish. I did study Spanish in college, I speak at about an intermediate level.
Let me tell you something...unlike popular believe...Spanish is not spoken everywhere in Spain. If you want to learn Spanish...then you have to focus on the areas of Spain that speaks Spanish. In addition to Spanish...there are places in which main language are Euskera, Gallego, Catalan, Valenciano, and a few others.Berlex said:

In Euskadi here, practically EVERYONE speaks spanish and maybe 1/3 speak proper Euskera. (I don't speak Euskera and I never have any problems. Sometimes I need to know what's man and woman in basque so I can read the signs on the toilets. But if I end up pissing in the ladies' toilets, I tell them its their own ****ing fault for not putting the signs in Spanish).
I'm guessing that in the other places it's similar. Even if they speak their own language, it only makes sense to know Spanish.
Wouldn't he want to speak Spanish with the places that speak Spanish as a FIRST language? That way he practice the language with people that speak it 24-7. Not some part-time speaker. Also, that way he can read the newspaper is Spanish.
In Euskadi, despite their nationalist gesticulations, they DO speak spanish as a first language. A few I've known not, but in the big cities everyone's from somewhere else anyway so it's utterly impractical to force basque on everyone, not that they don't try. Yes, and you can read the newspaper in Spanish here - in basque as well, but spanish a little easier if anything.Latinoman said:
I have been living in Galicia for a little more than a year, you will have no problems speaking Spanish. Signs and other things are sometimes in Galician, but it is so similar to Spanish that you shouldn't have any trouble (but I speak Portuguese as well, so maybe you'll find it to be different).
Salamanca comes to mind when you want to speak the "best" Spanish. The city can be a bit dull, though. At least after a couple of months. You could start there, bring your Spanish to a good level and then go around travelling.

Not a lick of English in those parts and the people are very warm and friendly.
The only downside for Galicia are the winters... you've never seen so much rain in your life! But it's a small price to pay for lush green hillsides and the best seafood you will ever eat in your life.
The cost of living is also really cheap. Rent is typically between 300-600 euro/month for your own crib.
La Coruña is one of my favorite cities (if you could even call it that). I really love that place and plan on moving there/buying a house in the not-so-distant future.

Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.
