UK to US: Living in America

Sup, Somewhere between the next three to ten years, i'm looking to formulate plans to live in America. Yes sounds pretty simply in theory but of course, it isnt.

I know a little about work visa opitions, but not enough. So for anyone who has made or knows about any such transitions who can fill me in on what i need to know, what foundations need to be laid and how i should go about certain things, it would be much appreciated.

You need a sponsor to get a green card. If you have very valuable skills, a large company could sponsor you. Usually a spouse is the sponsor; sometimes it works if you have close family in the US. That's pretty much it as far as legal options. If you have tradesman skills that are in high demand, you might be able to get paid under the table.

That means if I get someone who says that is able to sponsor me I can get a green card, even coming from a third world country?

No, sorry if I was unclear. You need a sponsor that is approved by the US Gov't. Spouses pretty much get automatic approval as a sponsor. If you had elderly parents here who needed your care, or children who are US citizens, that would work also. With any blood relative in the US, you could at least apply and see what they say. And like I said, large corporations have enough money and lawyers to work the system so that they get the employees they need, especially in highly skilled jobs like computer programming and engineering.

Truthfully, our immigration system stinks. The US gov't treats people who could contribute to this country like 'damn foreigners.' Because of how difficult it is to be a legal immigrant, we have a large underground of illegal immigrants working for cash. They do fine, until they get picked up on any kind of criminal charge, even speeding, and then they are sent to INS detention prison and later deported. I have visited these detention centers, and they are full of sad stories, like people whose only crime is being brought here by their parents when they were small children.
