I like tuna because it's a cheap, low fat source of protein, but in your opinion, is the whole mercury in tuna thing overblown?

Damn, according to the mercury calculator, the 2 cans of tuna I ate this week put me at 220% over the recommended limit. So now what? I have to scratch tuna off my diet? That sucks, because it's such a cheap source for protein. Has anyone actually got sick from mercury poisoning by eating tuna?

In hell. I'm Satan's lover.
FDA has a 1.0 ppm on mercury in fish and in Canada the limit for the total of mercury content is 0.5 ppm. Methylmercury is removed from the body over time. It is definatly a concern if you're a pregnant woman but I've never really bothered with mercury -- just make sure you're getting protein from beef, chicken, etc as well.

as someone who's had up to 4 cans a day for a stint (to save money, so I was buying the crappy kind) I can say that I was never sick..

unless you're eating a dozen cans a day I doubt you'll have any trouble.

remember to stay well hydrated. you COULD take NAC if you're really worried but I sincerely doubt that at a couple of cans a day, it's at all necessary.

Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.

According to the calculator on gotmercury.org I'm on average intaking 400% of of what I should be.

I'm going to check into this further because I haven't had an adverse side effects yet but I want to know what could happen.

in theory: high blood pressure, blood in the urine, liver trouble..

in practice unless you're taking in a dozen cans a day: not a lot. except you'll stink like fish.

Hmm. You got me thinking.

My blood pressure is in the normal range. My urine is affected by tuna,I don't bleed, but the urine smells like straight tuna. I have no liver problems to date.

I hate tuna breath after I kill can, that's the negative that I've seen from eating a bunch of Solid White Albacore Tuna.

Thanks for the input.

Oh please...

That counter is worthless bull****. Did you read the source and who put that up there? It's a lobbying organization for the protection of sea turtles and marine life who'd like to curtail fishing operations.

That is propagandistic trash.

Hey, I noticed the same thing when I took a piss this morning. I thought to myself, "Do I smell tuna? Nah...couldn't be" and thought I was just imagining things.

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

I didn't catch that! But even still, does that mean that the info is necessarily wrong? I'm sure they have an agenda, but that doens't mean the numbers are wrong per se.

Haha blink, your urine smells like tuna? Does that mean your spunk smells like fish as well? I'd hate to be your girlfriend!

About tuna, just stick to 1 to 2 cans per day at most and you don't have cause for concern. Especially if you're relatively active, because your body flushes toxins from the body faster if you are.

Those numbers are meant for the average, sedentary american who doesn't know what a gym is, or what running shoes are.

Maybe not, but I'd be extremely suspicious since it's telling most people here that they're giving themselves de facto mercury poisoning with a few cans of tuna each week.

i've read in a couple of places that "light" tuna (as opposed to albacore) is lower in methylmercury, and in other places that "it depends"... I haven't had a chance to follow up on this.
