So much context missing but I'll highlight why I think you didn't hear back from her,

1) She likely didn't have high interest to begin with. You were prob nervous when you got her number and she sensed desperation.
2) You texted and called her the same day. If she didn't already think you were desperate, well she does now.
3) You probably texted something generic and pointless, confirming your lack of options.

The fact you're posting about a mundane interaction with a girl as if it's some big deal is consistent with my points.

It isn't AS easy being direct with a girl you'll be seeing every week in class- if she likes you straight away then yes, be direct. Instadate her after class "I'm grabbing a drink at (insert bar)- let's go together." If she likes you but can't right now, get her number then wait a while as usual. If she's kinda neutral on you (it'll be pretty clear- IOIs don't lie) then asking her out and being rebuffed COULD make things awkward in future classes- but only if you give a sh*t.
