I'm new to the online world in the sense that I've never used Myspace or Facebook for the tools they are.

I'm after ideas for a good profile picture; I've never been one to take pictures of myself, so I don't quite know what to do here.

Additionally, I'm of average appearance if that helps deciding what I go for here.

That's not the OP, but it is about 90% of guys who can't figure out why they can't get girls online. They think a shirtless self-pic in their own bedroom alone is attractive, and in trying to look sexy, also stare down the camera like a serial killer. If they are lucky enough to get to even email with a girl, at the first opportunity, they will start bombarding her with blurry photos of their own d!cks, taken with a camera phone shoved down their pants. Then of course when these tactics do not work right away, the woman is a low-quality attention wh0re tease.

An online pic that works would be the opposite in every way. You're in public with people around you, all having fun, and doing something. If you have to show a pic of you with no shirt on, it must look like a coincidence. Be on a boat or beach or somewhere that having no shirt is normal. Flexing your muscles in front of the mirror in your bedroom for a self-pic will only make you look creepy.
