There are 2 forms of prostitution here in Nevada. There's the legal kind and then there's the "legal" kind. The first of which is going out to the chicken ranch and paying out the wassu for a menu of hot girls to line up and you get to rail one of them. I went out with some out of towners who got some from those girls, and they paid for me to get a massage from a nice asian (no happy ending but it was pretty decent anyway)
The other type of prositution is "legal" because prostitution is illegal in Clark County (Las Vegas). However running an escort service is legal in just about any part of the country. So what ends up happening is you page through the phone book and find "full service" escorts. When you call them and ask about sex they say the following statement verbatum "Of course prostitution is illegal in Clark County, but whatever happens between you and the girl off the books, we don't know about." So there you have it, they pretty much tell you that you can pay for sex but they've got a blind eye to any such transactions. I'm sure this happens in just about every major metropolitian city in America. In fact a lot of the strippers who go to the hotel rooms are nothing but prostitutes as well. I met a group of guys who were having a bachelor party and they asked the "stripper" to dance on the tables and show some TnA, you know stripper stuff. And she said to them "I don't really do that kind of thing, is there anything I can do with any of you one on one behind closed doors?"
So prostitution is pretty much legal in the vast majority of the country whethe you see it on the news or not. Its a shame because the actual legalized prostitution is so much safer for people who are going to pay for it. The girls are tested twice a month for STD's and if contracts one then her carrier is obviously over. So it's a definately a cleaner industry when regulated and the government really does enjoy the tax money it generates... right along with the gambling and 24 hour liquor service in NV.

I have no moral issues with prostitution. Where I really get angry is where the girls are 'sex slaves'.
I couldn't believe it, but here in the UK there are thousands of girls from asia and eastern europe shipped over and forced to work and get badly treated, some murdered. All run by organised crime.

I believe that prostitution should be legal as long as it's taxed, regulated, and the girls are required to pass blood tests, but i don't think it should be legal everywhere. There should be limits placed to where they can conduct business. I for one would not want to live next door to a brothel or look out my window and see crack *****s selling themselves in the street.

Here is my 2 cents to this topic
There are advantages and disadvantages to getting an escort/prostitute. The advantages are:
a) It lets you get off without resorting to your left hand
b) If you are inexperienced they can help you to become more confortable in the bedroom and give you tips and tricks to get a woman off.
c) A lot of escorts are really good listeners and are fairly intelligent. Most can give you better advice than any you will get from a shrink
The disadvantages are:
1) Its expensive. Most escorts usually start at $120 for an hour and some of the more exclusive ones can charge up to $1k
2) It is still illegal, though where I live (Canada) most law enforcement seem to turn a blind eye to it... most of the time.
3) You are still having to pay to have sex, which does degrade you and her, no matter how much she says she enjoys what she does.
Personally I dont find anything wrong with hiring an escort if you really, really need to get off as long as your willing to lose a bit of your self respect. Sometimes it is worth it, sometimes it is not. And I will admit some of the girls are pretty hot
