The post WWII economic boom was a one-off event that was absolutely unsustainable.
It wasn't some forever guarantee that all you need to do is show up and study what they tell you in school and you're magically guaranteed an easy life working at the easiest job you can get.
Just the existence of a middle class is very rare and short lived.
Things are mean reverting to how they've always been.

Dammit they told us that it would be different this time.
What you're saying is actually fascinating. I've never heard that before, the idea of a middle class being antithetical to human nature and group behavior. Largely history does support that idea, but there have been so many lost civilizations with no historical record, so for them it's all conjecture. But it's an interesting thought, that there have always been the rich and the poor, but not much in between.
