I voted for the drug cartels. One of the downfalls of the Italian Mafia/Five Families was involvement in drug trafficking. Too many Mafia guys would get pinched for drug offenses and then snitch on other Mafia guys for other offenses. See Henry Hill as an example.

TBH, the only reason the Mob got ahead is because the Jews focused on becoming educated and getting into academia and the Irish focused on becoming cops. In reality, the Irish gave the Italians marching orders in the northeast. Cartels did not care and even Irish Americans respect Hispanic Americans in a way that they will never respect Italian Americans.

They are also backed by the government who has said in a court ruling when independent distributors sued that anyone who wants to sell maple syrup there needs to join their syndicate.

If that's not power, I don't know what is.

None of the other gangs ever had the official support of their governments.
