i think he means that in this specific instance you failed because it sounds like you could've gotten more than you got.
in general you only fail if it takes longer than average(your own personal average) to get laid

slut defense doesn't mean that you escalated too much, on the contrary, slut defense means that you tried to escalate at all. if you don't run into slut defense at all and didn't get laid, then you simply didn't escalate.
however if you don't run into slut defense but still get laid then it would be either:
1. the girl is an actual slut or drunk/high
2. it's been a while into dating/the relationship/whatever so she doesn't feel the need to put up a defense
depends on a bunch of factors relating to the girl that you can't possibly know.
some girls really truly aren't going to let you get some on the first date no matter what, it depends on how easy the girl is in general.

Logistics I'd say. I had a 2nd date last night. She got pretty tuned up and I drove home. She told me her address, yet she was all over me. In the back of my head I was thinking, "just drive back to your place". On the other hand, she was super buzzed and I didn't want to push boundaries. We got to her place and she had her pants around her ankles in the truck. I see no need to push, I'd call that a wrap and a decent date.
