It is what these people do to garner publicity. And when that runs it's course... have a nice nasty @ss divorce complete with infidelity with co-stars... or better yet, one of them sudden decide they are homosexual. That and adopt a rainbow collection of children that are actually raised by nannies. If you are a Hollywood man in his 70s, and the 'plumbing' no longer works anyway, just chop the sucker off, change your name to "Kaitlin" suddenly you are all the rage again with people declaring you 'brave and beautiful'.

I think this is an example of being a glutton for punishment. He surely has some internal issues, maybe fear of being alone, a feeling he's not good enough, who knows what exactly.
If he was fully secure in who he is and his masculinity he'd look at it as a joke to get engaged to that woman.
