If she is worth going out with, she is worth picking up the check. It sends a very, very bad message to a woman. Is it a double standard? Yes. It is just how the game is played. If she is to ultimately submit to you, you need to pick up the check on a date.
First dates should never be dinner anyway. They should be action dates, perhaps with a lunch thrown in.

Well once the time to pay comes it means I have all the info I need about the girl.
If she is not worth, shows low interested or busted my balls I have no problem at all to ask 2 different checks and the waitress in front of her.
Atom has a point but we come from two different generations and I simply adapted to the current world for my age group.
Personally toward the end of date 1 I can make a 90% accurate evaluation of the outcome of such interaction.
No need to waste money even few euros nor give the wrong message that no matter what, she is entitled to anything....only exception would for girls who are super polite and nice even if I dont like them.

You can gauge where things are going by the time dinner and drinks are over. If you don't think it's going anywhere then by all means split the check. Also, you should probably have bumped uglies by the time you are treating to moderately expensive dinners so in the end it's a wash.
