This girl turned out to be really cool so I stand corrected. "Um" does not end the relationship (that was 2011).

That said, I have a new strategy of pushing their buttons on purpose - cancelling a date, withdrawing the offer, etc.

In this case I got to know her a little better (I started my post earlier about rapport based on her). You quickly learn whether she is evil or sweet when you cancel on her. But promise to make it up to them.
