Marriage is a social contract and as the same holds with any contract there is usually one side that is the winner. Divorce law and custody battles are lopsided in favor of females most of the time.

But for most guys working in middle class America marriage has its subtle benefits (I dont agree with them but they do exist). A man who is tied down is looked at as tamed and stable by corporations who are looking for middle management candidates of that nature. Single guys just wont take **** and that is more a liability then an asset for most companies whose bottom line is a couple of extra dollars. I've also been amazed by the number of friends who I thought would be perpetual bachelors get married to take advantage of tax breaks, lower insurance rates, and in general the ability to get just a little bit more money. If you are in business for yourself, or an athlete, then obviously this doesn't matter as is Michaels' case.

Hopefully any guy who gets married after they understand their earning potential realizes the loopholes and puts his money into assets that aren't considered part of the settlement. My guess would be that the half that she took from him was only the visible legal half and he was smart enough to move his money into things that she couldn't grab or at least would benefit him. Since I grew up in Chicago during the Jordan era I can tell you that the divorce was imminent due to his publicized behaviors. I'm surprised that it lasted this long.

FWIW I have a very good friend who once took his wife back on condition that she (they) write up and sign a nuptial contract. Since they were already married it was a post-nuptial agreement, not a prenup.

Why are you guys feeling sorry for this guy? He had already married Juanita and it wasn't until a year later when he agreed (in writing) to give half his fortune to her if they divorced. Then she only asked for a third (just 168 mil). Mike came out ahead of the game which he agreed to. Now ask why the heck did he agree to it as opposed to just a set amount or a cap like $20 million instead of a percentage?

Feel sorry for guys like Paul McCartney, Steven Spielberg, Neil Diamond and Harrison Ford. They lost an actual battle but Mike actually agreed to the terms before the divorce. Bad business decision.

Not really feeling sorry for this guy but its kinda mind boggling to see my favourite sport athlete of all time and one of the greatest athlete's in all sports to be shafted like that. I mean yeah he is rich and all but damn he was a young man when he married Juanita and he had the typical AFC love for this woman and he signed the prenup because he thought he probably won't need it.

Cases like this is a reminder to all men to really be careful of whom they marry if they decide to marry it all. Women are all nice and feminine when they come into marriage but if somewhere down the line they lose interest in their men they usually become vicious and masculine and will try to squash their men through the legal system.

He should have befriended Wilt:

Oh true, there are definitely women much worse out there, she was there supporting him and his various undertakings. The funny thing is that so many women (don't know if she did or not) say that the types of things that they do for their men could not have a price tag put onto it (primarily raising the children). Then they divorce. All of a sudden that priceless service has a pretty definite price tag!!!
