The exact meaning of beta

I had a general idea of what a beta is (from biology at school regarding animals),however people in this site use that term meaning different concepts so I would like someone to give a proper description.

Also some guys say this condition is from your birth others from society,some says you can turn from A to B others say you just can fake it.
