Would you wait until 5 to tell him the truth? 10? 15?

I'd let him figure it out as he goes, gently guiding him if he goes too far off course.

There's no better teacher than experience. If hypothetical son was repeating mistakes or struggling in his search for answers, I'd share the wisdom I've gained from my life - but only so much, as my wisdom is tainted by own experiences and he could be on a very different path than I ever was.

Kids are a clean slate and if they are not programmed by their environment then they will never get those ideas. You could always not buy Disney movies and opt for other kid entertainment. Its almost impossible though to escape these ideas though as it is pervasive in all media. I just went to Disney World with my little niece who is 5. The thing to do now is to dress all these little girls in princess gowns. It starts early. Yes, they are little kids, and it is all in fun but the message gets reinforced throughout their growth into adulthood by Daddy, media, and popular culture. If its a pretty girl who gets a lot of attention then now you might have a monster on your hands.
