With the deadlift my hands should be around shoulder length or just a little bit bigger right? Oh and at the end pull your shoulders back for a few seconds, right?

and in regards to the squat my shoulder blades should be pulled back to tense the back correct?

Another question about deadlifts. When starting the deadlift motion, should I feel such a strain on my knees, or is that not right? It's not terrible, but it just makes me wonder if that should be there.

I dunno, I just feel a lot of pressure on the knees at the very beginning of the lift. It doesn't really hurt.

You're likely pushing from the balls of you feet. push from the heels. lift your toes if you have to

Or are your knees buckling in or out and the pain is on the sides?
