Proper way of doing Dumdbell Shrugs?!

A trainer at the gym told me today that my technique could mess up my shoulders and I shouldn't be doing it like that. My technique with the dumbell shurgs was lifting my shoulders up and do a small rollback down. He suggested that in order to do it properly that I should just lift the weights up with my shoulders and then down and forget about the shoulders rollback.

Any ideas if he was right?!

Just pinch your shoulders up to your ears like you are trying to squeeze your head with your shoulders. Then slowly go back down...

Exactly. That's what DB shrugs are described as.
