New Zinc/chitin batteries found to be far superior to Lithium-ion batteries

This is pretty amazing...

Scientists have discovered a new use for Crustacean shells(chitin) and that is to combine them with zinc to form powerful batteries that are still 99.7% efficient after over 400 hours of use and can be recharged over 1000 times.

Chitin is currently a waste product thrown out by seafood restaurants daily with no real use.

Even better? They quickly decompose within 5 months in a landfill leaving behind only zinc which can be recycled.

Believe they can be produced very cheaply at scale and will replace Lithium-ion batteries in the very near future, saving the much rarer Lithium for other uses.

Massive technological breakthrough, IMO.

This is huge. Potentially no more rare-earth politiking, less pollution, easier to extract, etc

There's a huge issue going on in California where they are letting the Salton Sea (the state's largest lake) dry up to facilitate lithium mining. Nevermind that drying up the lake will kill Palm Springs/Palm Desert, the Coachella and Stagecoast festivals, golf & tennis tournaments, etc due to toxic dust from the exposed lake bed. AND where they are drilling is right over the San Andreas fault. Guys like Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffet and Elon Musk are heavily involved this too. Hopefully (being sarcastic here) they don't kill these new battery types.

Cool.

I’ve had my car for six years. The battery still has 95% of the usable range as it did brand new. Lithium Ion tech has come a long way. This is good news to find something potentially even better.
