A new U of T psychology study finds that on average, single women are happier than single men.

Forget the stereotype of the sad, lonely cat lady — a new U of T psychology study finds that on average, single women are happier than single men. According to the researchers, the results suggest that men may have more to gain than women in heteronormative romantic partnerships. “Ours is the first comprehensive study of how gender differences are tied to well-being in singlehood,” says lead author Elaine Hoan, a PhD candidate in the Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Arts & Science. “From here, we can begin to understand why exactly single women are doing better than single men, and how everyone can balance these elements to build their best lives.”

For the study, Hoan and Department of Psychology professor Geoff MacDonald examined four well-being outcomes of nearly 6,000 adults: how satisfied people are with their current relationship status, how satisfied they are with their life, how sexually fulfilled they are and how much they want to be in a relationship. Due to sample size limitations with non-binary individuals, the study focused on individuals who identified as men or women.

Overall, the researchers found that women fared better flying solo than men. They are happier with their single status, the quality of their lives, the quality of their sex lives and they desire a partner less.

Hoan says the results build on existing research that shows men fear singlehood more than women do, and that they struggle to navigate the expectations of traditional masculinity.

“There’s the notion that to really ‘be a man’, you must be the type that ‘gets girls’ — it’s a sign of status. But in the early stages of dating, men typically have a more difficult time obtaining a partner and therefore accessing sex.”

This connects to the finding that single women are more sexually fulfilled than single men, perhaps also because they may have more sexual freedom and can focus on their own pleasure instead of prioritizing a male partner’s.

Additionally, the authors looked at age and ethnicity in the context of gender. They found that older single men are happier than younger single men, which aligns with existing research showing that people tend to be happier with their long-term singlehood after the age of 40. They also noted that single Black women have a higher desire for a partner than single white women.

Hoan says the study serves as a jumping off point for contextualizing incels — extremists who resent women for their singlehood — within the broader population of single men. While incels are often studied as an isolated misogynistic subculture with unique issues, overall unhappiness in single men may lead some men to splinter off and join this group.

While the paper doesn’t provide direct evidence for why singlehood is a better experience for women relative to romantic relationships, it points to potential reasons for further investigation.

“For example, we know from existing research that in heteronormative relationship structures, women typically take on more than their fair share of domestic and emotional labour,” says Hoan. “As well, their sexual pleasure tends to be deprioritized and potentially reduced as a result of the unfair divisions of labour.”

She further notes that women may be more satisfied with their single lives overall because they usually have bigger social networks to rely on for support. They also have financial independence, meaning income as a traditional advantage of partnership is not as important as it used to be.

Hoan and MacDonald are next examining the link between marriage and well-being around the world, as their research continues to shed light on the extent to which romantic relationships contribute to life fulfillment — whether you’re in one or not.

“For single women more than anyone, societal pressures to partner might make it difficult for those who don’t want to necessarily jump into a relationship but feel like they should,” says Hoan.

“Our study validates that experience — if you want to stay single, you may be happier for it.”

Young single women always have to say they're happier being single. It's an ego thing to justify their single status.

Because if she says she's unhappy, the unpleasant follow up question would be, "so why can't you find a guy"?

Men are less about ego. If they're horny, theyll admit being horny. No pretense needed.

Why do yall react like being stung by a bee?

Ofcourse single women are happier than single men. A woman whose single wil stil be social unlike a man. They will still wine and dine, go out, party and ofcourse have TONS of sex.

Single on the contrary, isolate themselves, rely on sexworkers, feel unmotivated. Especially the latter is crazy; a single woman feels like she's the queen of the world while a single man doesn't wanna get out of bed to grind.

Just now @CornbreadFed made a thread about a woman " saving his friends life" by giving him a relationship. Remember: if you give so much power to someone else to build you they can also break you at any given moment!

There's a reason why so many men remain single ; the women have zero incentive to engage with them as most are losers.

I don't understand. Why are men upset not from getting women or having emotional bonds? Sex is alright at best and I don't really understand why people chase these emotional bonds. Men should be doing a whole lot better.

Make sure you read the fine print of the actual study, not the spun version in the article:

From the study:

In this study (N = 5941; 50% men; Mage = 31.74), we provide the first comprehensive, descriptive profile of gender differences on a suite of variables with important ties to well-being in singlehood; satisfaction with relationship status, life satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, and desire for a partner. Our results suggest that single women, on average, report higher levels of satisfaction with relationship status, life satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, and lower desire for a partner.

Average age: 31.74

Women over thirty that aren't in a long term relationship fill themselves with cope.

This study, and all other studies on happiness, is based on self reporting.

Any kind study that is based on self reporting is highly suspect.

People tend to give answers that make themselves look good rather than the truth.

This is yet another "study" that is highly questionable (based on self reporting) that is driven by a need to promote an agenda.

I call BS on this. No woman, unless she's the female equivalent of Shrek or over 60, is ever 100% single. To most women, "single" means not married or not in a LTR of at least 3 years. Everything else to them is fair game. Almost every woman has a plethora of beta male orbiters and simps at her beck and call for attention and "dates" which these weak man gladly pay for. So though she may not be married or in a heavy LTR, she is definitely out there having fun with multiple guys. That's today's modern woman.

The same cannot be said for men. Even good looking men rarely have a stable of fillies waiting for them at a moment's notice. Admittedly, some men do but it's such a slim percentage (1% maybe) it's not even worth mentioning.

So my thoughts on the article? 100% BS.

"Single" in this survey simply means "unmarried". It does NOT mean they're happier not having any men in her life. No straight woman wants a life devoid of men for intimacy.

So the study's title is BS. It should be "Unmarried women are happier than unmarried men".

Lastly, everybody should know this study is by some grad student in Texas. This paper is literally her homework. Why take someone's homework so seriously?!

They needed a study involving 6,000 participants to say the obvious: it’s easier for women to have casual sex. Yeah, not sh!t.

Women are “happier” being single than men because they get more attention from the opposite sex when they’re single. That’s all there is to it.

Perspective from the old lady:

The article is pretty spot on actually. I myself was not planning to get married again. I have my children, my own resources, a satisfying lifestyle on my own, a robust social network, and freedom to do as I please and go where I choose without having to consider anyone else.

Why did I remarry? Because it was important to my husband to be married, and he didn't want to risk losing me so he wanted to lock me down. So I sacrificed a lot of freedom (I'm not talking about sexual freedom by the way as I was never a promiscuous woman to start with) to marry him. I have to consider now where he wants to go, what he wants to do, and I cannot just go spend the summer in Europe on a whim any more. That's Ok. I love and enjoy him, but I would be just fine (and life would have less stress) if I were single. Its a trade off.

And my husband is Chad tier good looking and never has had issues obtaining hot women.....but he did have trouble finding an emotionally stable woman who had both a great appearance and her life together.

What this means is that when I am in relationship I retain sufficient personal power and self respect and the ability to walk away. I know I am fine on my own and so I don't "need" a relationship. This has created some conflict because he has not run into a woman he cannot push around before. So that has been an adjustment for him. As long as he is respectful, we do just fine. But if he has a bad day and expects to come home and act like an ass toward me? That does not fly. And yes, I end up doing more of the domestic duties than he does (a perk for him), but I was already doing that when single so for me the help in that department that he does contribute is a net gain; ditto his financial contributions.

Everything in life has trade offs. We have a good time together, a good sex life, and lots of humor & companionship.

But I know a number of unattached women who are perfectly fine being single & therefore, like me, they are not going to consider LTR or marriage unless the man is exceptional. Why would they?

Like it or not this is the new reality and it has been that way for awhile. The solution is to be exceptional as a man (if you want an exceptional woman) or accept that the average man will be choosing from average women.

Its not cope at all. Some is this thread are applying Law 36: Disdain What You Cannot Have.

I mean, the study says that single men have a harder time with being single than single women because they have less social support, have a harder time finding partners, and place more importance on having a romantic partner for sex, companionship, and social status. There is also a sentence in there about incels saying that their lower well-being is caused by the same issues that affect single men more generally. However, in my opinion, it is just that incels take these frustrations to an extreme and turn them into resentment toward women.

Either way, it is a known fact that women tend to be more sociable and have stronger social networks than men, so honestly, there’s nothing really new here under the sun.

If you were a single male who could bang an almost endless number of good looking women every day of your life while also knowing a similar number of decent looking women would jump at the chance to date/marry you any time you decided to settle down you'd have an entirely different outlook on being single as well.

In 1950 single women women were treated like men are today (and in 1950): shamed for not being able to get a man, and completely ostracized if they were sluts to compensate. They were so unhappy about it that they needed to do a few more waves of feminism to brainwash men into treating them preferentially.

2026 men would be just as happy as 2026 women if they were praised for being strong, independent, and focused on having sex for fun. Slay king!

That's already inspiring more confidence than Garth Brooks's guidance on not deteroriating into unintended self-parody. Up next:

I think men, between ages of 18-40, really want a full blown 100% relationship with a woman. She doesn't have to be hot, just not fat, long hair, some education, take care of herself. After the age of 40, especially if the man has money, he does not want it.

I think women between ages of 18-33, during their most fertile years, do not want a relationship with a man. They want their freedom, education, friendships, social groups, etc. After 33, when their sexual leverage and sex appeal has decreased dramatically, they really want a relationship with a man.

Men want to be in relationships and marry women when their innocence and sex appeal is at its highest points. The lower the innocence and sex appeal of the woman, the less the man wants to get into a relationship with her.

That is a super generalization and considering how many women are pushing to get married in their mid 20s, seems like you are talking about a smaller subset of women.
