Muscle Tear Down vs Rest

The rest period seems easy to set - a day, or as long as soreness persists, sometimes 2-3 days when just starting out.

But what about the length of the tear down period? For someone who works out at home, how many hours is optimal in terms of setting a time frame to work a muscle group? With rest, I can always keep doing more reps of anything. A day for a muscle group, maybe? I don't know exactly when to stop and begin the rest period. Soreness doesn't set in until about 24 hours, so maybe a day is the answer.

What if you kept doing more reps all day? As long as you don't injure yourself, it seems like that would be optimal.

I've never seriously lifted weights or gotten into bodybuilding. I'm just doing pullups, dips and using a heavy bag at home. I work from home, so I'm around all the time. I can keep going back and hitting muscle failure if I rest. I would guess there's got to be an optimum number of hours to keep doing that, but I don't know what it would be.
