That's fcked up. Guy should have gotten the 16million. Whether or not the guy wants the cancer removed is totally up to him (his quality of life is not up to the Dr. to decide). He went in for a circumcision, not to have his penis fcking removed. HIS PENIS!!!!

The doctor's duty is to protect the patient's life, from themselves if need be. If his penis really was that cancerous, then the doctor did him a favor. We don't really know the situation since it's a newspaper article and usually written for sensationalism.

I still don't see how you need to perform emergency surgery. Could this not have waited ONE day? So the doctor has a chance to inform the patient? I'm PMing fuglydude, the resident medical expert.

I work in critical care and emergency surgery is something we see of all the time. Classic example was my last patient: Dude was a fresh post-op liver transplant with increasing vasopressor requirements, decreasing pre-load (as measured by CVP), symptomologically presenting w/ an acute abdomen coupled w/ high intra-abdomenal pressures and a falling hemoglobin... I know that sounds technical, but right now I gotta take a shiit really bad, so I'm just gonna finish this post fast. Basically he was bleeding into his abdominal cavity... The liver Tx team took him back, and hopefully fixed him up. This is what emergency surgery is... something that needs to happen RIGHT AWAY to protect life.

Unless the dude had flesh eating disease, gangrene, or some kind of crazy septic focus on his doodle, the surgery could have waited a day after the doc talked about it with the patient. I'm not sure if the guy was critically ill before the surgery or what though...

That's exactly right. The doctor could have waited until after the circumcision and consulted the patient about the possible cancer. It wasn't going to kill him immediately anyway.

The patient could have had a choice at least, and could have gotten a second opinion. Doctors can be wrong a lot of the times.

The patient was obviously a victim here, and I'm surprised the court didn't see it that way. Maybe his lawyer was incompetent. In fact, I'm surprised it didn't settle out of court.

If the cancer was that life threatening, the guy would've had his cancer surgery scheduled way, way before circumcision even crossed his mind.

I'm a nuclear med student, cancer does not spread that quickly to the extent that the Doctor could not have informed the patient first.

I really don't know a lot about cancer. I know that malignant melanoma is the fastest spreading cancer, however, I dont know how fast it is... its definitely nothing like necrotizing fasciitis (fresh eating disease), where the clinical picture can change rapidly in under an hour.

Typically cancers spread as cancerous cells migrate to other tissues in the lymph and circulation. These cells are pretty much "invisible" to most standard easy to do medical tests like CT scans until they form detectable tumor masses.

If the pt's immune system is strong, many of the migrating cancer cells will never even cause a macroscopic tumor as they'll be killed off before they can proliferate.
