Nox: Which bands would you consider to be "good"

You can't ask for reccommendations without giving any ideas as to what you like
The songs that I used to listen to are from Jon Young, 50 Cents, Sum 41, Flipsyde, Fort Minor, Akon, etc. I like just about any song that has some meaning to it. Not like most of the new songs that have been coming out.

If you want 'good' music, the indie movement is the way to go. And not that crappy 'pop' indie you hear on the radio, but good indie bands like The New Pornographers, Belle & Sebastian, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, The Unicorns, etc.

Radio rap is crap rap. But there is actually good hip-hop if you look for it. My favorite rap groups are the ones that incorporate more instrumentation into their music and are more melodic and laid-back, like People Under The Stairs or The Roots.

I agree that you REALLY have to look for new bands that are decent. Looking for music that is popular in other countries is a pretty good way to go. Most of the bad music out there is what's playing on the radio in North America and fed by money. I'm currently enjoying two bands from Finland: Altaria and Nightwish.

Hell, I don't even mind bands like Wolfmother, but they're doing the same thing that Kingdom Come did 18 years ago (isn't it ironic that Kingdom Comes' lead singer is named Lenny Wolf?). They both are Zeppelin sound-alikes, but they do a damn good job at it :)

Lets see...

I'm going to post a list of some NEW songs that I like and I bet that 90% of you will be lucky to have heard at least 4 of these songs.

Even better, some of these are bands that have CDs out right now, some are promotional releases, some are even advance single releases.

Need To Breathe - Haley
Revelation Theory - Selfish And Cold
Life Of Agony - Wicked Ways
Megan McCauley - Die For You
Hurt - Falls Apart
Dark New Day - Follow The Sun Down
Funeral For A Friend - History
Marty Casey And The Lovehammers - Trees
Sugarcult - Do It Alone
No Address - Lasting Words
Evans Blue - Over
Augustana - Boston
The Killers - When You Were Young
Melee - The War
Pete Yorn - For Us
Alter Bridge - Shed My Skin
Mae - Anything
The White Stripes - Walking With A Ghost
Nine Black Alps - Unsatisfied
Blink 182 - Not Now
Mike Doughty - Looking At The World
Shinedown - Fake

...This goes to show that complaining doesn't solve much. I sure didn't get these songs from Billboard/MTV/Much.

-PM me your email and a song you'd like to hear/can't find. I'll cut you a clip. (And I'm say this because you won't find this stuff normally, trust me.)

Personally I cant stand rock... it strikes me as music for people who cant dance (or feel anything besides the whining angst typical of this genre) I like more uplifting sh!t with energy and soul.

One of my favorites right now is New Zealand-based "Fat Freddie's Drop" ... some solid, laidback music for macking!

I'm also a fan of "Turntables on the Hudson", one of NYC's hottest outdoor parties ever. They make great compilations, so does "Cafe del Mar"

house music baby, anyone else?
I can dig it. Charles Webster, Ame, Larry Heard, Vincenzo, Schmoov, Dennis Ferrer, Alix Alvarez, Motor City Soul are probably the best overall producers right now.

Please don't associate these new whiny emo bands with ROCK music. Rock & Roll has PLENTY of energy and soul. Too bad there isn't anybody like Hendrix nowdays

There's lots of excellent stuff if you look for it. Always is, always will be, and most of the best doesn't get very popular, IMNSHO.

Some I like are Blanche, The New Pornographers, Justin Clayton, Analog Missionary, Ethos, Amp Fiddler, Spearhead, Mission of Burma (old geezers whose new album is great), David Vining, Jem, The Nice Device, the Defectors, The High Strung, Gogol Bordello (best live) ... hell, there are lots. Detroit alone is home to about half of the above listed.

You know, my dad always asks me why I like to blare my music so that everyone around me can hear it...you're the reason. Anyways, you sound like my grandma.

Haha sorry, it took me about halfway through the list before I realized I had the song and artist mixed up (I thought it was song-artist). I had heard of a couple of those bads but damn, can't they pick normal names without trying to be creative but still ending up sounding cliche. Judging by all of those names of songs, it is more bands singing depressing songs about the not so great parts of life. What ever happened to songs that didn't focus on the bad sh*t? Fake, unsatisfied, Selfish And Cold, Wicked Ways, Die For You, Falls Apart - I'm about to start tearin' up here dude. Just like all rap videos have cars and girls in them, all modern rock is boring and sad sounding, or about a girl (ughh).

If you want good music you have to look to the old days. My favorite music is outlaw country (old country music). Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard are my 2 favorite artists. I discovered their music a few months ago and now that is all I listen to. It shows how good they are since I knew nothing about country music before I listened to their songs. They were real cowboys, real outlaws. They were real country music back when country music was manly and real cowboys and former outlaws sang it. Not the nice pop music like country music you hear today.

Waylon Jennings a real cowboy, Merle Haggard turned 21 in prison doing life without parole. They were "real" for sure.

Like I said if you want good music you have to look to the old days mostly. Whether it be rock to country the best bands and singers are the ones of the past.
