Wasn’t that the point of every virus? If it becomes too deadly, it risks running out of hosts to infect. A virus that keeps people alive longer usually has more chances to spread, so it makes sense that less deadly variants can end up becoming more common.

being less deadly allows more surface and time to transmit, a virus if very deadly would kill their host before being able to transmit, viruses strictly need a live host
