When our ancestors hunted mammoth there was many Gods, represented by mother nature. Monotheistic crap only happened much later circa around 1400 B.C. with Jews. We can date them precisely via language and their dislike of pork, right around that time pork became unpopular. If Jewish faith was any older they'd be eating pork for kwanza.
In other words, God is a made up concept. There is no God.
Purpose for God concept was originally morality. Extend of evolution. Prior choices like not eating your babies made tribes succeed. In new world where people lived in communities and gathered agricultural goods, stealing could lead to famine and people dying. Thus the God concept, so that people don't steel resources that entire community gathered.
Russians made-up the one God concept, just kidding, Proto-Indo Europeans did, ancestors of all Europeans, from Volga-Don region in Russia. They invented the wheel and populated entire Europe, or more precisely took over the Europe, because Europe was somewhat occupied by Pre Proto-Indo Europeans. Later they created the Greek and Roman empires. In Russian steppe there isn't many features. The one and only prominent feature is the sky. Thus the God lives in the sky. Back then there was several Gods living in the in the sky though. Monotheistic crap happened a bit later. But this was progression from praying to mammoth God to praying to God in the sky.
