OK, so I'm in an algebra class and there's a space between that and the next class. I often sit there and do some work before I get going to whatever is on my schedule that day.

A few weeks ago I started talking to a woman who attends that one and we've been talking an awful lot lately due to my class ending right before hers starts (almost every day now). Mostly a lightly flirty banter...I don't turn it up THAT much with people I don't know well.

Anyway, since the class right after mine is the next level up in math, I "sat in" on one (obviously with the sole purpose of getting her number) and ended up getting it on the basis of studying next semester.

How should I go about asking her out without looking like a tool? It just dawned on me that exams are next week and I then have three weeks of winter break, so I'll at the very least not be speaking with her for a month or so, let alone do any of the "studying" we talked about.

Why would u sit in a class to ask out? Just ask her out when you talk to her after your class.

"(obviously with the sole purpose of getting her number) and ended up getting it on the basis of studying next semester." not so cool, I donno any NERDS in school that would do that.

I think if you ask her out confidently, u'll get teh girl. Most guys in college are supplicating AFCs.

I was intending on sitting in a Math 80 class at some point anyway to get a feel for the type of problems I'll be doing next semester (the math teachers at my school are legendarily bad). It's not like I swam across the Atlantic to get this number.

"Hi ______ . Perhaps when are exams are done you would be able to join me for coffee. I know this great little place around the corner and you could tell me about the course next semester."

^ Perfect.

Just because a woman listens to you and acts interested in what you say doesn't mean she really is. She might just be acting polite, while silently wishing that the date would hurry up and end, or that you would go away... and never come back.

Boring + friendliness = boring and friendly

In my opinion, at least, you shouldn't need to tell the girl an excuse (especially a lame one) to have 1 on 1 time with a girl. Unless you're trying to mask your intentions, or lower her defence, but it's obvious anyways why you're asking her out. If you 'friendly'-up the invite, things can go downhill (friendzone, subtlety, "ioi?", etc) from there.

Be a man in her eyes, cause thats what you are. The friendly approach probably works in college too, but u could just end up wasting a lot of time slowly asking her out and finding out she's not interested.
