Yes and no. You have to be able to BACK IT UP. You may get some people fooled, but when they ask what you do for a living, it better be congruent with your "high-status" behavior or you'll come off as a poser. Make it, don't fake it.

Just be social. Talk to everyone. Be funny. Make decisions for the group, like where to go or when to leave. Do things that the rest of your group is afraid to do, like talking to that HB9 over yonder. Help everyone, and become the person that everyone turns to for advice.
