I was walking through an underpass with my girlfriend in arm and the homeless man who sleeps there said, ' hey that's a nice girlfriend, treat her right, she's the best you're ever going to do. ever ever ever' then he continued to say the word ever repeatedly as I walked away. We both laughed but it didn't feel right to me. He was probably right but even so. Was it some kind of insult?

He’s a homeless person. As well as someone you don’t know (emphasis on this part). Disregard random people’s idle comments, as they have no possibility of understanding you. Just by virtue of them not knowing you. A man is not made purely by appearances either.

I’ll be extremely polite and respectful to a homeless person on first meeting if they are to me. But I’m not gonna let them throw idle jabs like this at me. At that point I would have told the guy I’m on my way to steakhouse xyz so he should be sure to dig there in the dumpster tomorrow for my bone and fat scraps.

Plenty of homeless people have mental illness and/or drug issues, so I wouldn’t give what they say a second thought.

You definitely can't take what the guy was saying to heart. I'm sure he was wallowing in his own misery and was trying to project it on to you.
The guy definitely sounds unstable.

I've never heard any homeless people give out compliments before. I'm surprised he didn't ask you for change.
Whatever he said, just shrug it off. It's not like his opinion really matters. He lives on the streets.

I think what bothering you, is not if it was insulting but that he was right.
