I do want to learn to do car repairs, but I’d feel like I’d be freaked out the first time I drove after replacing my brakes. Like, what if I fvcked up?

I felt that way after the first time, but it's honestly super easy and you save a sh!tload of money.

I just had a professional mechanic do my O2 sensors on my car and they charged me $1k for the parts. I can get the same parts on rockauto for $300. And on top of that the fix they did didn't work since all the codes are back. A lot of mechanics are worthless hacks.

The #1 thing you have to look out for with learning to do things yourself is the DIY mentality. It's going to be harder that you're led to believe by a DIY'er a good 90% of the time.

I have a truck so I have no problems getting under it without jacking it up, and it has a lot of room in the engine compartment to work on it. Thoese were both reasons for buying what I bought, because I tend to do most of the work myself. I've done repairs and fabrication for a long time

Even if it is challenging, you always learn something. To me that's worth it in the long run because almost all engines are a variation on the same basic principle

Used car prices are absurd right now, I sold my car shortly before Covid and still haven't bought a new one since then because of this.

Even on craigslist, 20 year old pieces of **** with 200k+ miles sell for $5000 or more typically, and they'll probably break down within a month of buying them. Why bother?

I'd rent a car. Gives you a ton of peace of mind. It's not as much of a money sink as you'd think since you don't have to carry insurance or do any maintenance.
