I've changed my views about this a LITTLE since a thread I posted just recently about the idea of female friends. If you have a gf and aren't looking for another women, then it's good to have a hot female friend.

If not, and you really want to bone her, then don't go into the friend zone. Show her what you REALLY want instead.

My views on having female friends had altered over the years. I'll address this question specifically to keep it breif.

Having a hot chick as a friend can be good thing undercertian conditions. First you have to be absolutely sure not to have jelouse feelings for this person. If that means you've had sex with her or something like that in the past or had a past relationship both agreeing that you're better off as friend or just plain not interested in her whatever she's got to be JUST FRIENDS with you. After that having a single hot fiend can be beneficial. They can go "fishing" for you at bars and clubs. They can con guys into giving you free drinks, get you into vip areas of establishments, it's like having a swiss army knife in the social world. Definately not bad companion in that respect.
