Not really true.

In my opinion, many martial arts are DETRIMENTAL to your survival in real-life situations. In this category fall all of the McDojo Karate Schools, kung fu schools where you learn the "shaolin" secrets, ninja schools, and kitty tae kwon do.

What happens, IN HER MIND, is that she comes to see you as WORTHLESS simply because she hasn't had to INVEST anything in you in order to get you or to keep you.

You were an interesting diversion while she had nothing else to do. But now that someone a little more valuable has come along, someone who expects her to treat him very well, she'll have no problem at all dropping you or demoting you to lowly "friendship" status.

The city that sleeps. Sometimes.
strikers should know the grappling basics
grapplers should know the striking basics

but mixing and matching too much will fvck you up.

however, they do usually have good striking classes at BJJ schools, at least like once a week.

everywhere,nowhere
i agree, sometimes the basics of both and then intergrating it
is the best way.
It makes up for what the other descipline is lacking.
If i could, i'd totally want to avoid a fight at all possible
but at a last resort - sucker punch the guy soo hard half his face breaks and his 'homies' run off...

Absolutely!

Most people who practice martial arts (which I think is different from being a martial artist) have just enough skills to get themselves messed up in a real street fight.

It's not the art that you train but how you train it. You can do taekwon-do in a strip mall dojang, flicky kicky, Bruce Lee yelling sort of way or you can train the way the ROK black berets train. Same art, wildly different results.
