Apparently it was the "in thing" to be fat and was seen as a status symbol back in the day. Similar to some other countries around the world where being fat was associated with wealth and ability to provide.

Doubtful these ever become a thing again today with all of the knowledge of how that extra weight typically shortens lives and brings negative health consequences.

They are still popular but have become increasingly less exclusive as their membership ranks have swelled (no pun intended) to include 70% of the U.S. population! And because we live the golden age of equality and inclusivity, women have also been allowed to join en masse (again, no pun intended...)

"For most of our ancestors, the poorer they were, the less food they had to eat, and the thinner and shorter they tended to be," Leeworthy said. "And power and wealth and status are attractive characteristics: If a person's body is their temple, then being the size of a cathedral told others that you were someone of significance."
