Apparently it was the "in thing" to be fat and was seen as a status symbol back in the day. Similar to some other countries around the world where being fat was associated with wealth and ability to provide.
Doubtful these ever become a thing again today with all of the knowledge of how that extra weight typically shortens lives and brings negative health consequences.

Fat men's clubs were a status symbol in the early 20th century — and you had to meet the minimum weight requirement to be eligible for membership
The New England Fat Men's club eventually dissolved in 1924 after none of its members met the 200-pound mark.
