"I just moved here from Florida."

That sentence contains at least five follow-up questions she WANTS you to ask. Where in Florida? What brought you here? How long have you been in the area? What do you miss? How does it compare to here?

She handed them to you on a silver platter. And you said, "Oh cool. I come here every week. I love this band. Ummm... pretty crowded tonight."

She smiled politely. Nodded. And never texted you back.

I was that guy for years. Talking too much. Listening too little. Panicking about my next sentence while she was literally feeding me the answers.

Then I found 22 rules that fixed the whole thing. Rule number one: shut up and listen. She'll tell you exactly what to say.

Ok.. I've been seeing this girl off and on for 5 months, I'm 23 and shes about to turn 26 this month.....
and because of circumstances beyond our control we're seperating in about two weeks...

anyways... today was all good until I had to pick out something to wear.. I work at Club Med so we have different dress-codes on different nights and whatever.. so I'm in a funky, have fun mood so I'm wearing these black shorts and white T-shirt (its black and white night) and I put on these old-school knee-high socks.. and I think they look kinda funky and fun...

but not her... shes like "no your not wearing those out..."

and I was like "hell yeah! these are sweet!"

so she says "I am not going to dinner with you like that.."

and I was like "ok..."

so I walked down the hall expecting her to realize how dumb it was to argue over what socks I was wearing she would come around...

nope... got sooo mad and stormed off to her room and I didn't see her till later in the bar...

now.... I understand its all about compromise, but I wouldn't reject my girl based on what she was wearing... I may not agree with what she was wearing but ultimatly its up to her... but I wouldn't be so stupid as to waste what limited time we have together based on what other people think of her on what she wears! she says "you look like a fool like that!, and I don't want to be around you..."

so I'm kinda lost.... shes still kinda mad at me... she views it as if I chose wearing the socks over coming to dinner with her... which I can kinda understand... but still... its just freaking socks...

is there any way I can get her to see that we may not agree on everything butnot to get so mad at the small ****??

thanks in advance for any and all replies...

Best,
Jin

"She Made Her Decision Before You Finished Your Sentence"

Three seconds. That's how long it took. Your shoes. Your posture. The way you held your drink. Whether you looked at the floor or looked at her.

She already filed you away. Interesting. Boring. Safe. Bold. Before you even opened your mouth.

Everything you say after that is just her confirming what she already decided.

So stop rehearsing lines. Fix the first three seconds. Stand tall. Look up. Smile like you mean it. Walk like you belong wherever you're standing.

The words come later. The impression comes first.

Well if you're separating in two weeks, what's the difference? I take it you mean she is going long distance but not ending the relationship?

Anyway, she doesn't want anyone she knows seeing you like that. She wants to be with a guy that knows how to dress. You should be wearing sandles and no socks with shorts!! Study up Dawg.

"You'll Never Feel READY to Walk Over"

Next Monday you'll feel more confident. After the gym you'll feel more confident. After one more drink you'll feel more confident. After you get a better haircut, a better jacket, a better job.

You've been "getting ready" for two years.

She's standing ten feet away right now. She'll be gone in four minutes. No amount of preparation will manufacture the courage that only comes from moving your feet.

Walk over. Stumble through the first sentence. Let it be clumsy. Let it be imperfect. You will feel more alive in those ten seconds than you have all month.
