A good variation on this is to say something (that could possibly be made up) in a serious way, and wink at the same time.

I know this is an old thread. But I've been using winking as a cold approach method, and if she smiles then you know she is interested.

It's a cultural thing really. In the UK it means many different things, including a casual greeting (as common as a hand-shake), acknowledgement, sign of endearment or indeed flirtatious.

Gonna agree with this. Most of the time I wink, its when kidding around with friends, and agreeing to something they just said. Usually as a way to acknowledge something said, but in a nonverbal manner.

With women, Ive only ever winked after there was already some rapport built. The urge to wink at a stranger has never been there. And I dont think a girl has ever done it to me either. Usually you just make eye contact a couple times, and smile to assure mutual interest.
