Cool places to live in NYC metro area besides Hoboken?

Any takers on this one. Basically, a nice urban setting (where one can walk to places) and where seems to be alot of young people.

Actually, Harlem is becoming very upscale and a move-to destation for young people.
Brooklyn is going in that direction, too.

Harlem, give me a break. I am white, have NO desire to live in Harlem and would not be welcome either.

Parts of Brooklyn are cool, as well as Queens. Manhattan is too expensive and chaotic.

That is because I am from the Southern part of NJ and never ventured off into NYC often.

Harlem or anything above 125th st is going through gentrification as it has been for some time- higher rents are driving many of the minorities or lower income people that lived there for years out (most likely to the bronx) in favor of middle to upper class professionals (many of whom are white). With that said, even in the more predominately black and latino neighborhoods, you won't be bothered because of the color of your skin. This isn't the 70s and 80s where you would no doubt be risking an ass whopping for venturing into one of those neighborhoods as a caucasian.

And regardless, it's new york-you can be in one of the most affluent neghborhoods in the city and then walk one block down and be in the ghetto.

If you want a nice neighborhood with reasonable prices I would suggest an area like forest hills in queens or certain parts of brooklyn (such as williamsburg which will probably become pretty darn expensive in a few years).

No.

However, racism still exists and the races are still very segregated...look around you.

A predominant black neighborhood prefers not to have any white people in their neighborhood and vice versa. If you think otherwise, you are ignorant.

When I take the train into NYC, I see a lot of upscale looking apartments near the 125th st station that weren't there before.
