Look up a few canned openers or use: "Who lies more guys or girls?" These will be your training wheels until you start getting consistent approaches.

However, its most likely your not smiling when your approaching, or poor body language, soft voice tonality. It really doesn't matter what you say, but your delivery thats killing you.

And, don't give a **** about what your friends think. I do cold approaches all the time, everywhere, and its the main way I use to meet girls, and the most fun. Your friends are complete fools.

Ouch, that hurts. Rejection is a bitter pill to swallow. The whole cold approach thing is a bit creepy if you ask me. Maybe you should join a group or something. Start a business. Raise money for something. That way you will at least have a reason for being other than picking up strange girls you see on the street.
