I think it's because most guys are lazy and take what they (think) they can get, rather than going after someone they really want because they're afraid of failure.

I think it is because they know it is unlikely to be complicated. The cute mid will be grateful, understand it is a one time thing, and probably won't do an expose to the press.

If they go for models or cheerleaders then those girls are going to want to be GFs or at least get some perks such as party invites, fancy dates etc and are going to try and use the pro athlete for exposure and fame. They tend to be manipulative and have a lot more game.
