A little problem

There's tis pretty hot chick who has her locker next to me, and has had it by me since 6 grade (we're now Juniors). We've both become really good friends, and we joke around. I'd love to ask her out, but there's one problem; she's always hanging out with all these thug types.
Some of them aren't that bad, but there are some who are African American who are really annoying. How could I distinguish myself from these people and ask her out?
Before I take your comments, I should describe one of these guys. He's about a year younger than me, and talks a lot of ****, is always being physical with the chick, but backs down when he pisses me off. He is just an annoying pest, but one that won't go away.
Any suggestions on handling the dude and getting the girl?
