Not that I'm personally advocating multi-level marketing, but if you have people underneath you making commission for you, that's an example of passive income. Or if you own a site such as sosuave that gets 10s of thousands of visits and advertising are paying you to place ads. That's passive income. Of if have some great pictures you took, selling them to a stock photograpy company and getting commission everytime someone's buys it.

Steve Pavlina is a writer slash productivity guru. I know because a few months back I bought one of his books, Personal Development for Smart People, which I thought was interesting but a little too abstract to be practical. The web traffic he brags about comes from the fact he was the FIRST self-help guy to actually blog on the web and has a lot of good ideas he puts out there to retain readership. And if you read his life story, the speed of his life transitions are definately not average.

Bottomline is he's not your typical guy and I don't think he's ever done anything typical. Being the guy who thinks outside the box is probably something he identifies with, which is why he's rocking it like a badge and is talking down to everyone else

I'll also point out the obvious - the guy DOES have a job: he's a writer. Understandably, there are a ton of people in 9 to 5's who HATE their job, but there are a lot of people out there who hate writing too.

His 10 reasons are subjective. IE He talks about a 9 to 5 being too risky because you have no leverage over your boss or industry. But he writes a blog and he's a slave to his readership and competitors. If his web traffic ever dies, so does his income. If Anthony Robbins ever decided to put his ideas on his blog for free instead of using it as a marketing tool, Pavlina would be done. Same supply/demand economics

If you wanna get to the essence of what he's trying to say about working for yourself, just read Rich Dad Poor Dad - same sht but more accurate, without all the negative talk. And no delusions about the hard work it takes to become an entrepreneur. Kiyosaki was in debt living out of his car for weeks before he opened his first business, making wallets, which eventually tanked (and more power to him for admitting it)

Don't take advice about how working corporate is a deadend from someone like Pavlina who's worked for himself for most of his life. That's like taking advice about picking up girls from a dude who doesn't even talk to girls

I don't believe he claimed that he does not "work", he is saying that a *job* is not the secure vehicle it is made out to be.

His principles are sound. I didn't read the article in depth, but the gist of it is absolutely sound.

Passive income streams allow you to LIVE life.

I'm working on one as we speak. It's a lot of work to set up, but eventually I will be able to make a choice-

1) Continue working hard to build it even bigger

2) Send my product to a fulfillment center and collect checks
or
3) Somewhere in between

Option #3 will give me the best of both worlds. I won't have to work like a dog....I can set my own schedule and travel anywhere in the world, tax deductible. It will keep me busy without stressing me out. Life is good....

Pavlina is a dickhead. Working for salary (hourly, even) gives you much more stability and flexibilty in making money in a part-time side business (at least at first) than submitting immediately to full-time self employment, and relying on business loans or the whims of the market for your next check.

What you're forgetting is that the average corporate job pays 45-55k starting salary. Why? Not because it's proportionate to the value you're providing, but because it's about the same as what EVERY OTHER SIMILAR POSITION PAYS. It's enough to provide a healthy middle class income (assuming you can grow with the position and not get laid off and have to start all over) and nothing more. Most businesses pay people based on their "salary history," meaning they would have willingly started you out at 70k a year, but because your last position only payed you 45k, they now have an excuse to pay you less.

If you work your ass off and improve the company's business in a way that makes them tons of money, they might reward you with a 10k/year raise, which comes out to about $500 more a month (big fucking deal).

Running your own business means you're not subject to the confines of the salary cage. Your pay is directly proportionate to the amount of value you can deliver. If you can move 10 units a month at $5k a pop, then guess what? You will make $50k a month, and it probably won't take 160 hours of your time, either.

The reason for all the negative reactions to this post aren't because it's wrong, but because it's one of those inconvenient truths that people don't want to accept. Nobody wants to be told there's a better way of doing something, especially if they're been doing it inefficiently for so long.

Remember, you aren't "making" money if it requires you to give up something infinitely more valuable (your time).
