Since this thread got linked by @SW15 I thought I'd comment. I used to think that Georgia and Atlanta had an inferiority complex towards the North and the west coast because they are more cosmopolitan. However, what I realized is that it actually has one towards southern states like Virginia and North Carolina. Everytime I go back to Georgia, it just seems like so many people are putting on a mask or have an angle.

However, I do owe some credit where it is due. There are some Good Christians who are legitimately Good Christians and legit great people. These people are, unfortunately, not common.

What you get a lot of are:

• Suburban white kids that try to desperately act black
• Smug middle class people
• Hipsters (tons of em in Athens)
• Ratchet hood rat types
• Insecure ethnics
• Overcompensating Asians and Indians

Why is that a thing in Metro Atlanta? Is it because of the large Black population in general?

Yeah, because the rap music scene is huge in Atlanta and the kids raised in the city are a hybrid of goody two shoe Christian types mixed in with desperately trying to fit into black culture because it is cool. The city just has that clout chasing nature to it which is even worse than Miami.

I think a lot of the White children in the Atlanta area are raised in the Atlanta suburbs and not the city itself.

Black culture in general seems to be a bigger deal in Atlanta than most places.

I know you weren’t responding to me, but I went to the same high school as Quavo, I was a senior when he was a freshman. The school was about 65–70% Black, with the rest being a mix of White and Hispanic students. Many Hispanic students were undocumented, while others were into cars, skipping school, and clubbing.

Most Black students came from good families and could afford detached homes, but many still embraced gang culture, aspiring to be rappers or dancers and dressing in the baggy fashion of the time. We also had a lot of people moving from New York for cheaper real estate, and they quickly adopted the local culture. Some went on to HBCUs like Georgia Southern or Savannah State.

I’m not sure how much has changed, but I see why people outside metro Atlanta wouldn’t want to assimilate. Those in rural areas tend to lean Republican, especially if they are rich and have a lot of guns, while downtown is more Democrat. I tell people where I live now that we had a step team in high school, and they’re shocked.

With BET headquartered there, Atlanta feels like the Hollywood of Black America. If I had to describe my single, 30+ acquaintances from back then, they still fit that culture today. See a picture below of a girl I used to know.

Interesting you say that, might be true for Black Americans in Atlanta but I don't think it is as true for the White ones. I feel like a lot of the Whites that came to Atlanta came from places up north like Pennsylvania, Jersey, New York, and New England. When they came, it was for better job opportunities. So they brought their rat race mentality with them but added in a chip on their shoulders since they could not hack it up north.

I think that explains the loud overcompensating Georgia culture and need for flashiness. I almost see Atlanta as LA's trailer trash cousin. Women try to doll themselves up and are just as vain but at the same time, it is not wealthy like an LA or as prestigious.

Of the many cities I have been to and lived in, Atlanta had by far the most cliquey, conceited, and snobby culture despite not having that much to be snobby about. It's not a London, NYC, or LA by any stretch of the imagination.

Arizona is a lot like this, mostly in Metro Phoenix because the majority of the state lives in a Phoenix or a suburb of Phoenix.

The Atlanta scene and the Phoenix scene are quite different though. Phoenix has never had a significant Black population and Atlanta has more historical roots than Phoenix.

Of the many cities I have been to and lived in, Atlanta had by far the most cliquey, conceited, and snobby culture despite not having that much to be snobby about. It's not a London, NYC, or LA by any stretch of the imagination.

It's not a top tier global city. It's a hub for connecting flights for Delta Airlines.
