I was able to quit smoking by playing video games 10 years ago.
I'm not flexing here, but I smoked from age 12 to 22. I stopped smoking by not buying tobacco anymore and not accepting cigarettes from other people. And I broke the 'emotional connection' to nicotine by calling myself a 'non-smoker' instead of an 'ex-smoker'.
It's not black and white. "Find another way" it's not that simple. Addictions require discipline and willingness to cut them off. Usually doing things that take over your time and not focusing on that one thing that triggers you is the best way to go.
Yes, I understand that addiction is not in the substance but in the mind of the addict. What you're suggesting is to replace one addiction with another, but that's not quitting, is it?
What you need to address is the underlying issue that caused the addiction, not mindlessly replacing one addiction with another.
When I still smoked, I was always busy and the 'smoke breaks' provided little pockets of rest during work. I kept taking the breaks, but didn't smoke. I had coffee, but without a cigarette. I stopped fidgeting by consciously folding my hands.
The most difficult addictions are the ones where there's no clear negative consequences, like biting nails. And you have your nails with you always and you'll bite your nails unconsciously. Sure, you can use disgusting nail polish which will alert you when you start putting your nails into your mouth. What worked for me is to carry a nail file everywhere so I could keep my nails short and smooth and I would be less tempted to bite a hangnail. But the most important part was addressing the issue that caused me to bite nails.
Masturbation is usually fine, it releases tension and gives you some dopamine. Masturbation turns toxic when you
need to do it several times a day and thoughts of masturbating / sex occupy your mind 24/7.
Most people look at porn / erotica occasionally. If you're addicted to porn, you're using incessant masturbation to avoid addressing the underlying issue, whether it's boredom or unsatisfying sex or lack of sex or nervous tension relief.
If you deal with the underlying issue of the addiction, it's much easier to really quit the addiction.
Using tech to block your access to porn is just the starting point.
