They did this so the CCP would force them to go abroad to get wives, then they'd use their families still in China along with secret police stations to compromise those Chinese men and force them to spy, this is why the culture is so focused around taking care of your family so they can publically disgrace you if you don't stand with the CCP

They've essentially created free espionage
