I'll freely admit I'm quite nostalgic for the 1980's.
Recently I've been watching some videos of female groups/singers from that decade on YouTube. I'm talking about artists like:
- The Go Go's
- The Bangles
- Bananarama
- Kim Wilde
- Annie Lennox
The above were all mainstream 80/s singers/groups. But when watching these videos I was struck by how innocent they were . Even if they were singing about love or sex the girls would remain pretty much fully clothed. The girls are sexy but in a very wholesome way. And a lot of the music was edgy and meaningful, albeit in an upbeat way. The music videos themselves were also really humble affairs - often very plain and just showing the girls singing, not trying to be 'mini movies'.
Contrast that to mainstream female singers now.
- Lady GaGa
- Rhianna
- Christina Aguilera
- Shakira.
The videos featuring the above and others almost always seem to contain very overt, in your face, sex. There's nothing innocent or sweetly alluring about it anymore. It's totally brazen and the videos often feature near nudity. Also, in my opinion, the music itself sucks and none of these b*tches have anything of interest to say. It all feels manufactured and over produces.
I'm no prude, of course I like looking at hot, near naked females. But even though they are less hot I find the girls from the '80s actually sexier than the sluts in today's music vids.
Anyway as a wider question I wondered if anybody else would agree that this has had a wider influence and actually girl's today are more likely to display the *****y, girl power, vulgar traits or a Lady GaGa than the sweet but beguiling sexuality of a Go-Go's era Belinda Carlisle for example. Thoughts?
