It's for protection. Women who live alone often feel vulnerable, probably because there are so many psycho dudes out there who want to marry a woman after a first date and take getting rejected very very badly.

Agreed, with the right dog. Not everyone lives where it is legal to carry a concealed firearm. A good dog is the next best thing. I actually prefer dogs to guns, because I don't have to conceal the dog.
