Why do some people have fetishes?

Hi guys, something I was wondering about lately...do you think everyone has a fetish of some sort, or only certain people?

I have seen smoking fetishes (hot girls smoking cigarettes), spanking fetishes, braces fetishes, lesbian fetishes, etc.

Why is it that some people have weird fetishes?

Does anyone else think a hot girl smoking a cigarette looks sexy?

There were quite a few articles on digg about fetishes. Just go to digg and search for fetish. But my take on it, is that fetishes are not something out of the norm, but are themselves the norm.

Some people have for instance an asian fetish, while people may look down upon that, what about the people who only find girls of their own ethnicity attractive, isn't that a deplorable fetish on its own.

So since fetishes just trigger chemical reactions in our brains, rather pleasant ones, I don't really have anything against them as long as they are harmless. For instance pyrophilia, which means people like to get off doing it while burning, is rather unhealthy.

I'm not too clear on what fetish really means.

The only thing that I'm going to say is that I have masturbated to some pretty weird stuff that I won't mention in order to not destroy my reputation or fear of legal retaliation.

I tend to have several things that I like to look at and it cycles kind of like a flavor of the month.

I personally view a fetish as a sexual response to ANYTHING that is somewhat removed from the sexual connection itself. So if one has a foot fetish, it's just about them and the foot - the rest of the person is on the periphery (and incidental to the sexual act/connection). It is the foot that is the focus of attention.

Now a sexual quirk or predilection is a bit different, I think. So take the foot again. Guy X could have a thing for a woman's feet, BUT her feet are not the focus of attention - they are part of the larger experience (though he likes rubbing her feet and has a "thing" for beautiful feet).

I think one goes from a sexual quirk to a fetish when one begins to fixate on the object/body party/thing. Also, the word "fetish" has lost its clinical resonance since becoming so popular in our vernacular. As pen said, it's "cool" to have a fetish (it gives you layers and suggests depth and "darkness" even). Obviously there are varying degrees of fetishism (i.e. the amount of time a "devotee" puts towards getting into contact with the object of his affection).

I think most "fetishes" held by people are inane and part of human sexuality (in other words, they aren't THAT way out in left field). And then you have the really disturbed folks who get off on some real fu@ked up shiet.

It's interesting though, isn't it? We are the barometers for what makes something a fetish (in the generic, innocuous sense of the word) and what makes a "fetish" a sort of sexual perversion. So it's all relative really. What's a "fetish" to a supreme prude might be peanuts to a super pervert with an insatiable libido (for example).
